JE Technology Desk: Twitter is witnessing stiff competition from Meta Threads, and in an attempt to catch up, it is reversing several decisions enforced recently. The recent one includes the reversal of account restrictions to view tweets. And in the latest move, the company is rolling back its new TweetDeck and enabling free API access (that was moved to a paywall model recently), according to The Verge.

The report adds that the tool was disabled after Twitter made sweeping changes, such as implementing reading limits and removing legacy application programming interfaces (APIs) that powered the old TweetDeck. For context, third-party app access has been restricted on Twitter since the first month of 2023.

TweetDeck 2.0, a powerful tool for businesses and news outlets to manage a Twitter account, witnessed an upgrade on June 4 with "full Tweet Composer, Advanced search features, new column types," and more. Moreover, the announcement tweet highlighted that "users must be verified" to continue accessing the new deck after 30 days of the announcement.

Amid these developments, Roberto Doering, Harpy creator, added they moved to "old v1 API" to stir the features in action again. However, "this doesn't mean that harpy will be maintained again, seeing as Twitter will most likely shut down access to their legacy API (again) soon and third-party apps are still against their TOS [Terms of Service]."

No official announcements from the handles of Elon Musk, CEO Linda Yaccarino, or associated Twitter handles were available that confirm the comeback of the old TweetDeck, as per the report. TweetDeck 2.0 was in the works for more than two years and is supposed to get paywalled in the next 30 days. However, considering the latest happenings, we do not know whether this commitment will materialise.

Coming to more updates, the company recently announced that the post-reading restriction was an inevitable decision because of Twitter's data scrapping undertaken by AI firms for their benefit. After these limitations and a global outage, the microblogging app is witnessing the heat from a close rival from Meta - Threads, an Instagram app, which has stamped several download records since its launch.
