Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is poised to extend his collaboration with Legendary Entertainment, as the studio has given the green light to Timothee Chalamet's 'Dune 3'. According to entertainment news outlet Deadline, the esteemed director and the studio are also in discussions to bring the best-selling non-fiction book Nuclear War: A Scenario by author Annie Jacobsen to the big screen, alongside Dune 3. Villeneuve's immediate focus will be on Dune 3, which is based on author Frank Herbert's Dune: Messiah. The previous two installments in the franchise, Dune: Part One (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024), were adapted from Herbert's seminal 1965 novel Dune, which follows the story of Paul Atreides and his noble family, the House Atreides, thrust into a conflict over the desert planet Arrakis.
Villeneuve has frequently voiced his intention to wrap up the Dune narrative with a third installment, adapted from Dune: Messiah, originally published in 1969. Legendary has now officially announced the project. Following Dune 3, the Canadian filmmaker may shift his focus to adapting Nuclear War: A Scenario into a film. Legendary secured the rights to the book shortly after its release in March this year.
The book delves into a hypothetical scenario of nuclear war, exploring the potential consequences based on extensive interviews with military and civilian experts intimately involved in the development and decision-making processes surrounding nuclear weapons and response plans.
At present, Villeneuve's 'Dune: Part Two' maintains its strong performance at the box office, having amassed a global gross of over $630 million. The movie features an ensemble cast that includes Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, and Javier Bardem.
