An 11-year-old deaf and mute Dalit girl who was raped, was found on Wednesday in Rampur district, Uttar Pradesh, with multiple injuries on her body including cigarette burn marks on her private parts and bite marks. UP Police have arrested the accused from the same village, who suffered a bullet injury in his leg during the encounter, and started interrogation procedures against him.

The minor, whose father is a marginal farmer in the village, went missing on Tuesday evening and her family has been looking for her. On Wednesday morning, a man from the village found her lying unconscious  in a field around 500m from her house, half-naked, with her face swollen, and informed her family. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, which referred her to Meerut for better treatment. Police have registered an FIR under rape of a minor and relevant sections charges of the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Police reviewed CCTV footage from the area and identified 24-year-old Dan Singh, a resident of the same village, as a suspect. When officers attempted to take him into custody, he opened fire and was injured in the retaliatory firing, officials said.

Dr Anju Singh, who conducted the girl's medical examination, told The Times of India, "This is a clear case of rape by one or more persons as there were multiple injuries on her private parts. Her face had been struck with a blunt object, leaving it swollen. She was terrified and unable to explain anything. It is one of the most horrific sexual crimes I have seen."

The girl's mother added, "My daughter is extremely terrified. She is getting fits after the incident."

Rampur police chief, Vidya Sagar Mishra, said that the girl’s mother submitted an application to the police and informed that her daughter, who can't speak or listen, was sexually assaulted. We registered a case and arranged for the girl's medical examination. Three teams were formed to track down the accused. When we tried to arrest him, he opened fire at the police team. Police fired in self-defence and he suffered a bullet injury. We have electronic evidence against the accused. The girl is being treated," he said.

The senior officer mentioned that according to the CCTV footage the accused was talking to the girl outside her home. "He then convinces her into accompanying him somewhere where she was raped."
